Defaults in December 2024

As I do for subscriptions, I keep a dedicated page for the default apps I use and publish a post in December capturing a snapshot of the apps currently in use. It's time to review what has changed over the year by comparing this list with the Defaults in December 2023.

It turns out, only a few changes were made to the list.

Every time Apple releases an update to its OSes, I try to switch back to Reminders, but it never sticks. I don't like the UI or the overall user experience. During the year I ended up switching back to Things, and this time I didn't return to Reminders.

Halide is the kind of app I used to install and uninstall every now and then. I have some sort of lifetime version of it from purchasing it in its early days. During the year, Halide changed everything when they introduced the Process Zero feature, which skips all the iOS AI processing and captures photos as a real camera would.

Thanks to iOS 18, I now have both the Camera.app and Halide available directly on my Lock Screen.

Safari remains my primary browser, but I've been using Orion more and more on both my computer and phone. Doing research with Orion on the computer is amazing because it maintains a tree of tabs, so you always know where each tab originated. While Orion still needs some work, it's good enough for web browsing.

Since I'm using Kagi as my default search engine, I had to install their Safari browser extension to redirect searches to Kagi. Since Safari offers a limited selection of search engines (and Kagi isn't one of them), the extension is needed.

Finally, I deleted Micro.blog from both my phone and computer and replaced it with Bluesky's app.
